two tugboats, the Atlas and the YP-389
The Army Tugs dive site is located off the coast of North Carolina and is a popular diving destination for wreck divers. The site consists of two tugboats, the Atlas and the YP-389, which were sunk intentionally in 1988 as part of an artificial reef program.
The Atlas tugboat is located about 18 miles off the coast of North Carolina and sits in about 100 feet of water. The YP-389 tugboat is located about 20 miles off the coast and sits in about 90 feet of water. Both wrecks are relatively intact and provide a unique opportunity for divers to explore the structures and marine life that have taken up residence on and around the wrecks.
The wrecks are home to a variety of marine life, including schools of fish, sea turtles, and occasionally, sharks. Visibility can vary depending on weather and ocean conditions, but on a good day, divers can expect to have excellent visibility.
Divers who plan to explore the Army Tugs dive site should be experienced and have the appropriate training and equipment for deep diving. It’s also important to dive with a qualified guide who is familiar with the area and can ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
